CARRIACOU COMMUNITIES PLAYING THEIR PART IN 2012 INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

Which village can cook the best coo-coo and okra in the twin- isle parish of Carriacou and Petite Martinique will be determined next week as communities here are playing their part in the celebrations of Grenada’s 38th anniversary of Independence.

They are participating in the “Prime Minister’s Best Village Competition.” And, according to the Culture Division which is responsible for the organization of the competition, ten communities have registered to compete.

Already, some community groups have begun the cleaning of their villages.

They will be showcasing their national pride in three components: an environment project, culture and food through the preparation of green pigeon peas soup and Carriacou’s national dish coo-coo and okra.

Meanwhile other activities in celebration of the tri-island state Independence from Britain include the annual Independence Road Race on January 25th and Independence Church Service at the Hillsborough Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, January 29th.

The parish celebrations for Petite Martinique will be staged on January 31st and the following day, February 1st the people of Carriacou will stage their parish celebrations at the Hillsborough Recreation Ground commencing at 3p.m.
