MP GILBERT NO LONGER UNDER SCRUTINY

MP Gilbert is no longer under scrutiny; it was confirmed today January 19th, that he has been officially terminated as a Cabinet member.

Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas today asked His Excellency, Governor-General Sir Carlyle Glean, to revoke the appointment of the Hon. Joseph Gilbert as a Minister of Government. The Prime Minister will address the nation this evening at 8.00pm.

An air of uneasiness hung over the Spice Isle following a meeting of the Cabinet yesterday over a letter which, allegedly, was penned by Environment Minister, Joe Gilbert during his tenure as Minister of Works.

Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas is currently in possession of a "letter of comfort" which was apparently sent to a promoter of casino gambling in Grenada indicating that the gaming laws of Grenada would be urgently amended, and that a gaming license would be "promulgated" for their project. The gaming licence was to be issued in the name of Harbour Holdings.

Gilbert's authority to sign such a letter without Cabinet approval was discussed at the meeting, and the letter was authenticated prior to Prime Minister Thomas deciding on his due course of action.

An informed source revealed that only three of the 16-member Cabinet was in agreement with the action proposed by the Prime Minister in the form of the termination of Gilbert's tenure as a minister. But, the source was also quick to point out that rumors appearing on internet forum that such action on the part of the Prime Minister would precipitate the resignation of the Cabinet were unfounded.

When contacted about his status within the Cabinet yesterday, Gilbert expressed uncertainty and referred all such queries to the Prime Minister for comment.
