SCOUTS IN ACTION LESSONS OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM

The students of the Scout Troop and Environmental Club of the Happy Hill Secondary School last Saturday spent the day doing what most young people may not find so interesting.

They first visited the Beausejour mangrove area and were taught its importance to the sustenance and development of a healthy marine life and ecosystem. As part of this experience they embarked on a clean-up and beautification of the mangrove and its surroundings. They also visited the Moliniere Marine Protected Area (MPA) where they spent the balance of the day this time planting trees and then took a trip to the Sculpture Park on the nearby sea bed.

Scout leader, Mr Stephen Antoine, said “it is not the first time the group is visiting the area and hoped it would be an on-going experience where the students will learn to preserve and protect their environment for posterity’s sake”.

Mr Kemron Dufont who is an Environmental Engineer and Integrated Science teacher at HHSS with responsible for the Environmental Club said, "the main objective was to have the students understand the importance of marine life in their environment and how it can be affected by climate change; and what mitigation measures we can use”.
