Grenada’s premier track and field club, SpeedZone, is beaming with pride from its association with the coveted titles bestowed upon senior members of its club, at the recently-held prestigious 2011 National Sports Awards.
400M World Champion, Kirani James was awarded Sportsman-of-the-Year; and 200M World Semi-Finalist, Janelle Redhead received the Sportswoman-of-the-Year award.
Both athletes, who originate from Gouyave, were trained by IAAF-certified Elite Coach, Albert Joseph, before moving to the United States on sports scholarships to further their education while fulfilling their sporting passions.
Speaking after the ceremony, which was held on Saturday, 21st January at the Grenada Trade Centre, coaching icon, Albert Joseph expressed his delight on their achievements, which is the second at the senior level for James, and first for Redhead.
Mr. Joseph is quoted as saying “I think I would be speaking for everyone in saying that we are very happy for them (James and Redhead). They have always been committed to the track, and they work very hard. They both have a lot of work to do still, along with Joel Redhead – the brother of Janelle, as they pursue this year’s Olympics. We will continue to support them in every way possible at SpeedZone. Three of the four athletes who have already qualified for Olympics are from SpeedZone. That’s another win for us, too, which we are very proud of!”
The club’s annual invitational meet will be held on Saturday, February 25th at the Cuthbert Peters Park in Gouyave.
